“THERE ARE NO BAD HORSES, JUST HORSES IN BAD SITUATIONS,EACH DESERVING A FAIR CHANCE, FOR A BETTER LIFE.” Tina Snyder SHEW Executive Director
While our founder Tina Snyder has been rescuing horses for more than 30 years Safe Haven Equine Warriors (SHEW) the inception (2014) was officially established 2017. SHEW is a 100% volunteer-based 501(c)(3) non-profit animal welfare organization dedicated to the rescue of equines from slaughter, abuse, and neglect.
We passionately advocate for the humane treatment of all equines. SHEW provides a safe haven with quality care, rehabilitation and retraining for rescued horses in preparation for adoption into great homes. Some rescued horses that are too old, unrideable, or with special needs may live with special foster families willing to provides long-term financial support and emotional/physical care.
Some horses coming to SHEW require more specialized care to live a comfortable life. Those horses live out their days as permanent ambassadors used in our educational programs. Typically they are used in our various non ridding programs to bring joy and education to the public. In cases where a good humane quality of life through rehabilitation is not possible due to irrecoverable injury or illness, humane euthanasia becomes the last act of kindness.
SHEW educates the public about the perils of the unwanted horse and the horrors of the slaughterhouse pipeline where over 50,000 American horses end up each year. The vast majority were healthy prior to starting the downward spiral of auctions, kill buyers, kill pens and scam dealers.
By any standards, slaughter is not a humane way of population control or humane euthanasia.
Through a multitude of community outreach and ongoing educational programs, we continue to create awareness and advocacy for a better tomorrow for horses and people alike. SHEW’s strong leadership engages our supporters and volunteers not only in the rescue and rehabilitation process, but also educates on equine welfare issues and current legislation on a state and federal level. SHEW is active in the Maryland Horse Council, the Maryland Association of Rescues and Equine Sanctuaries and The Homes For Horses Coalition.
